Test Your Skin’s Hydration Levels

We all want to feel as healthy and beautiful as possible, both inside and out. But where should you start? Well, keeping your skin hydrated is one of the most important and simple ways to achieve soft and supple looking skin.

Hydration keeps your skin cells plump so your skin appears smoother, giving you a more youthful appearance – and who doesn’t want that?

Test your skin’s hydration levels

It’s easy to see how hydrated (or dehydrated?!) your skin is with the ‘Pinch Test’! Here’s how:

  1. Squeeze the apples of your cheeks or pinch the skin on the back of your hand, lower arm or abdomen with two fingers.

  2. Hold the skin up for a few seconds and then release.

  3. Observe how fast your skin returns to its normal shape or form.

  4. If the skin quickly returns to normal, it’s an indication that your skin is sufficiently hydrated, whereas if it takes longer, it shows your skin’s hydration levels are a little low.

What causes dry and dehydrated skin?

There are many causes for dry and dehydrated skin, from environmental reasons to human factors such as daily habits.

Weather can be one of the biggest elements that affects skin hydration, with winter being one of the worst when temperatures and humidity levels plummet. Air conditioning and central heating are also no friend when it comes to skin moisture as they reduce humidity and dry out your skin. And while taking long, hot showers or baths might be relaxing – they aren’t too great for your skin either. We also recommend avoiding frequent swimming in heavily chlorinated pools.

Dry skin remedies

The most important thing to remember when it comes to hydration is to drink water – we can’t stress it enough! Aim to drink around 2 litres (or 8 glasses) a day to make sure your whole body keeps properly hydrated.

Get into a habit of adopting a good skincare routine too, such as using a gentle cleanser every day. One of our favourites is Swisse Beauty’s new Swisse Sweet Almond Gentle Cream Cleanser that’s enriched with Sweet Almond Oil to nourish the skin, Witch Hazel Water to soothe the skin and Rice Bran Water to improve skin hydration.

The Swisse Blood Orange Brightening Cream Moisturiser gives a boost of hydration and radiance while the Swisse Rosehip Nourishing Cream Moisturiser is filled with wonderful antioxidants to nourish the skin and replenish the skin’s moisture barrier.

Need that extra boost of moisture? Indulge in a relaxing leave-on face mask such as the Swisse Hyaluro-Natural Intense Hydrating Mask, a deeply replenishing facial treatment made to deliver intense hydration. You’ll wake up with a radiant glow in the morning. Or try the Swisse Hyaluro-Natural Intense Hydration Boost Serum or Swisse Argan Youthful Facial Oil

And for those warm summer days where you need a bit of a spritz, Swisse Rosewater Hydrating Mist Toner is a daily calming mist infused with a gorgeous blend of botanical extracts to soften and hydrate skin.
